Afua Hirsch appointed as Trustee

We are pleased to announce that Afua Hirsch has been appointed as a trustee of The Death Penalty Project Charitable Trust. Afua is the Legal Affairs Correspondent at the Guardian,  has previously  practiced as a barrister in criminal defence, and teaches public law, constitutional and human rights law.

Joe Middleton appointed as Trustee

We are pleased to announce that Joe Middleton has been appointed as a trustee of The Death Penalty Project Charitable Trust. Joe has been a barrister at Doughty Street since 1998. His practice has covered various areas including housing, employment, education, public law and crime, immigration and extradition, death penalty work and other human rights challenges. He also has very broad experience as a consultant on elections and election laws in transition democracies.

Simon Goldberg appointed as Trustee

We are pleased to announce that Simon Goldberg has been appointed as a trustee of The Death Penalty Project Charitable Trust. Simon is a partner and media lawyer at Simons, Muirhead & Burton solicitors. He has some 20 years' specialist experience. The Legal 500 ranks Simon as a leader in his field, and the Chambers Guide states that he "earns market praise for his work in both financing and production".

Saul Lehrfreund presented with Honorary Degree by Reading University

The Death Penalty Project is proud to congratulate one of its Executive Directors, Saul Lehrfreund, on being presented with an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws by Reading University in July 2009, in recognition of his contribution to human rights.

Edward Fitzgerald awarded Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year

In June 2009, Edward Fitzgerald QC CBE was honoured with an LAPG silver jubilee Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year award for Outstanding Achievement. Edward has also recently been appointed as joint head of Doughty Street Chambers.  Edward has worked tirelessly for the human rights of prisoners facing the death penalty, and his award is richly deserved. We congratulate him. 

Edward Fitzgerald appointed CBE

The Death Penalty project is also delighted by the news that their founder trustee and long-term supporter, Edward Fitzgerald QC, was appointed a CBE during 2008.  Edward was also recently appointed as joint head of Doughty Street Chambers.

Keir Starmer QC appointed Director of Public Prosecutions for England and Wales

The Death Penalty Project  is delighted by the decision of the Attorney general to appoint Keir Starmer QC as Director of Public Prosecutions and head of the Crown Prosecution Service. Keir, formerly Joint Head of Chambers at Doughty Street Chambers, took up his new appointment in November 2008.  Keir has been a long-standing supporter of The Death Penalty Project and is a founder director.
