On 26th October 2013, in association with Bar Council Malaysia, the National Human Rights Society (HAKAM) and Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia, we held a forensic psychiatry training workshop in Kuala Lumpur for mental health and legal professionals involved in capital cases in Malaysia.

Professor Nigel Eastman and Dr. Marc Lyall, leading UK forensic psychiatrists from Forensic Psychiatry Chambers (FPC) conducted the training and the Handbook of Forensic Psychiatric Practice in Capital Cases  was provided to all participants free of charge and used as the main training material.

The training workshop was well attended by over 40 participants, including psychiatrists, psychologists and members of the legal profession. Participants took part in interactive case discussions and the workshop examined topics including the relationship between mental disorder and offending, criminal legal psychiatry, clinical forensic psychiatry, assessment in forensic psychiatry and forensic psychiatry within jurisprudence.

A network of mental health and legal professionals based in Malaysia has been established and a helpline email has been set up by FPC to assist and respond to queries/issues raised by mental health professionals in Malaysia.
