To mark International Human Rights Day 2014, we are hosting the UK’s first screening of an award-winning animated short story, “The Last 40 Miles” by Alex Hannaford. The film is based on a true- story of a condemned man as he takes his last journey from his solitary cell on death row in the east Texas town of Livingston, to the execution chamber 40 miles away in Huntsville. During the journey, the unlikely warmth of the guard escorting him, and his ever-present hope keep him company.

About the Director

Alex Hannaford has worked as a journalist for 17 years, 10 of those covering the death penalty in the U.S. for publications including the Guardian, Sunday Telegraph, GQ magazine, and The Nation. In January this year he witnessed an execution for a story on the cat-and-mouse game the states were playing over obtaining lethal drugs. Alex has interviewed countless inmates on Texas death row over the years; “The Last 40 Miles” is a short animated film based on the stories of a few of them.
