We are extremely delighted to announce that Joseph Middleton, a barrister at Doughty Street Chambers and one of our Directors, has been awarded the Sydney Elland Goldsmith Bar Pro Bono Award 2015. The prestigious annual award was announced at the annual Bar Conference on 17th October’s and is given to an individual barrister or a group of barristers in recognition of outstanding commitment to pro bono work. Joe was nominated by the Death Penalty Project (DPP) for his outstanding work on death penalty litigation.

Joe has provided the DPP with pro bono assistance for over 10 years and in 2015, Joe has made a tremendous contribution to our death penalty litigation in Kenya and Malawi and in a ground-breaking pilot programme for vulnerable prisoners in Belize. Most recently, Joe conducted a mission to Tanzania where he met with Ambassadors from various European Union Missions to discuss the restriction of the death penalty in the East Africa region.

Joe’s nomination for the award was supported by a number of prominent human rights lawyers, including, Edward Fitzgerald QC, Sir Keir Starmer QC, Eamon Courtenay SC of the Belize Bar, Timothy Bryant of the Kenyan Bar and Emile Carreau, an Australian lawyer working in Malawi.

Joe is an outstanding barrister and his dedication and commitment to assisting those facing the death penalty is most deserving of recognition and we congratulate him on receiving this award.
