Michigan Journal of Law Reform 2016 Symposium

At a Crossroads: The Future of the Death Penalty’, was held on 5-6 February 2016 at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Co-Executive Director Saul Lehrfreund was invited to address the symposium and made a presentation on ‘Judicial Activism and Constitutional Developments Restricting the Death Penalty in the Commonwealth’.

The two day symposium reviewed problems with the current administration of death sentences in the United States and included topics such as jury selection, false convictions, and the geographic disparity in which counties execute capital offenders. The panel also discussed the development and movement toward abolition of capital punishment on an international stage.

Henderson Hill, Executive Director of the 8th Amendment Project delivered the keynote address. Other participants included Samuel Gross (University of Michigan), Carol Steiker (Harvard Law School), Andrew Novak (American University Washington College of Law) and Sandra Babcock (Cornell University).
